Projects
When we reach 2027, Odense Fjord must have the prerequisites to reach a good ecological status. We are working to rethink our approach to this ambition. It is important that the plans are in place. That the agreements are ready for signature. And that the financing is in place. What we do must be done wisely.
That’s why our partners work closely together on projects, studies and initiatives that all aim to bring us closer to our goal.
The work is carried out in working groups that deal with issues such as the fjord’s water and catchment area. Representatives from our partners participate, each contributing with their specific knowledge and skills.
From time to time, this work results in larger projects, which you can read more about on this page.

Collecting field and natural stones for stone reef construction
We are in the process of collecting natural stones from local actors who have made them available for the establishment of stone reefs in the fjord.

Establishing sand and stone reefs
In several places, the bottom of Odense Fjord has become pure mud. This makes it almost impossible for animal and plant life to thrive. However, sand and stones on the bottom of the fjord can change that. The University of Southern Denmark is currently working on the project, which is being realized with support from Aage V. Jensen Naturfond, Odense Municipality and Nordfyns Municipality.

Hotspot analysis reveals impact from land
Our professional group that deals with the catchment area of Odense Fjord is putting the finishing touches to a major study in which farmers, researchers and volunteers have worked closely together. The so-called “hotspot” study aims to investigate where the nitrogen discharges originate, and the preliminary results show that there is a big difference in nutrient content depending on where the sample is taken.

Eelgrass planting at full speed
Eelgrass plays a vital role in the marine environment by promoting biodiversity, protecting the fjord bed, and absorbing and fixing large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, over the last 100 years, Denmark has lost up to 90 percent of its eelgrass population. Odense Fjord Samarbejdet is co-applicant on a project that will result in the development of new eelgrass planting technology.
Knowledge
From time to time, our work results in reports and studies that help us and the outside world learn more about water status and marine nature restoration. You can find them on this page.
Coastal Water Council Report: Rebuilding Odense Fjord will be difficult and expensive – but not impossible
January 2024
The report shows that nutrients from the land areas close to the fjord must be significantly reduced. At the same time, it highlights the need to establish measures to improve the aquatic environment below the surface of the fjord, such as establishing stone reefs and planting eelgrass.
The report was created under the auspices of the Coastal Water Council for Odense Fjord, which was founded as one of four coastal water councils nationwide in February 2023 with Odense Fjord Samarbejdet as project manager.
